Between 1840 and 1907 thousands of camels were brought to Australia for riding, construction of rail and telegraph line, as well as draught and pack animals for exploration.

They were very useful animals till the invention of motor transport, which caused many camels to be let loose in to the Australian outback. Over time the camels` population started to grow, and in 2008, the estimated population was 1 million! Sometimes in the Northern Territory, there is more than 2 camels per 2km2, which doesn`t sound like much but it is very crowded.
Just look at that map. That's a lot of camels. From getting released in to the outback camels soon spread to Western Australia, the Northern Territory and they even peeped their way into Queensland!
